Retread tires — old tires that receive a new tread — are quickly becoming the most popular types of tires on the road, especially on class seven and eight truck fleets. Retreads are not only much cheaper than new tires, but they’re also considered reliable, safe and eco-friendly. They’re so economical that they’ve become the number one choice of tires for all government fleets.
And although most retread tires are under warranty, it is still important to take care of your tires for optimum performance.
Check your tires daily. When inspecting your tires, check for lumps, cracks, cuts, penetrations and abnormal tire wear, especially on the edges of the tire tread. These damages may be caused by underinflation or misalignment. If you notice such damage, visit a tire retailer. Driving on the road using damaged tires could result in tire destruction and extreme loss of air. Both of these incidents can lead to an accident.
It is also important to check the inflation pressures of the tires in York, PA or elsewhere in the country, especially before long distance trips. If you drive your tires without the proper inflation pressure, you may experience rapid and irregular tire wear, sudden tire destruction, and loss of vehicle.
Drive the speed limit. Whether you’re using Michelin retreads or brand new Goodyear truck tires, all tires wear out faster when abused while driving high speeds. Tires will also wear out when subjected to hard cornering, speedy starts, unexpected stops, frequent driving on poor roads and off-road use.
Avoid road hazards. Along with experiencing wear and tear when subjected to high speeds and reckless driving habits, tires can get damaged from various road hazards. It is important to avoid driving over curbs, potholes, glass, metal, rocks, wood debris and other hazards, especially if you’re using OTR tires.
